Alcohol use is a leading risk factor for chronic disease and premature death at both provincial and national levels. Alcohol warning labels are one recommended strategy in a comprehensive approach to curbing alcohol consumption and related harms at a population level. The World Health Organization recommends health warning labels to raise consumer awareness about the negative consequences of alcohol. More than 47 countries have policies that require alcohol warning labels, however, label content and format varies across jurisdictions and evidence to inform labels is limited.

The research described in this presentation focused on the development of alcohol labels with a cancer warning, Canada’s national drinking guidelines, and standard drink information.  These labels were tested in a real-world setting to determine the extent to which evidence-informed alcohol labels are an effective tool for supporting informed and safer alcohol consumption in Canada. This session provides an overview of the alcohol label studies, highlights key results and discusses lessons learned and potential implications.

By the end of this session, participants will be able to:

1. Summarize alcohol labelling policies and practices in Canada and globally
2. Describe the results of the program of research that designed and tested an evidence-informed alcohol labelling intervention in Yukon
3. Discuss potential implications for alcohol labelling practices and regulations in Yukon and other jurisdictions in Canada

Presenter(s): Dr. Erin Hobin

Dr. Erin Hobin (PhD) is a Collaborating Scientist with the Canadian Institute for Substance Use Research at the University of Victoria. She is also a Scientist at Public Health Ontario, an Adjunct Assistant Professor at the University of Waterloo, and has an appointment (status only) at the University of Toronto. Her research focuses on developing and evaluating population level interventions for chronic disease prevention, specifically in the areas of healthy eating, physical activity and alcohol control. The primary purpose of Erin’s work is to impact decisions and produce solution-oriented research, by generating evidence to inform interventions for chronic disease prevention.

Sheila has been an FASD instructor, coach and consultant since 2002. Sheila is a strong advocate for improving the way FASD is addressed at local levels where those with FASD live, learn and work. Sheila focuses on capacity-building within the context of the existing system of care for the prevention, management and diagnosis of the disability.

This workshop is designed for professionals who have some knowledge of FASD and who are responsible for explaining the needs of clients and organizing care priorities.

• Explore fresh ways of identifying, understanding and prioritizing the needs of clients with atypical neurodevelopment.
• Using the framework of the FASD diagnostic guidelines, this workshop will help shift service planning to incorporate FASD-informed practice.
• Assist you to feel confident as we move towards change for those affected by FASD or other neurodevelopmental disorders.

Dr. Haner is a clinical forensic psychologist at the London Family Court Clinic where she works with children, adolescents, adults, & families. Her special interests in FASD arose from working with young people involved in the court system & learning about the over-representation of people with FASD therein. Dr. Haner is a co-facilitator of the FASD caregiver support group in London (a shared undertaking of LFCC, Merrymount, & Ways). She takes a healthy-relationships focus in all her work, including a range of treatment, consultation, training, & assessment services – including FASD assessments according to the 2016 Canadian Guidelines. She also has an elder relative with FASD who she loves very much.
